Young Eagles

The 2022 Young Eagles programme is now accepting applications. Applications will close on the 30th of November, 2021.

The Young Eagles programme is designed to introduce young adults to aviation and provide them with an opportunity to experience and gain knowledge of the different sectors within the aviation industry. This should assist them in making a knowledgeable decision about their future and a career in aviation.

As a Young Eagle you will be given the opportunity to have several flights in light aircraft and participate in visits to aviation facilities in and around the Wellington region. These visits may include, but are not limited to, trips to the Paraparaumu Flight Service tower and Wellington Control tower, the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim, the Paraparaumu MetService office and the Ohakea Royal New Zealand Air Force Base.

The programme is set to run every 4 weeks from January 2022. The dates and times are subject to change based on availability and weather. The programme will run on Sundays and will be planned to run during school terms and to avoid public holiday weekends, with the exception of the first event in January.

Flight Commanders

The Kapiti Aero Club Young Eagles program relies on club members who volunteer as Flight Commanders to provide amazing flight experiences to the Young Eagles as part of the program.

As a Flight Commander you will be flying as Pilot in Command of a club aircraft or your personal aircraft on various trips around the Wellington region. You will have one or more Young Eagles on board with you and you will have the chance to walk them through what you are doing as part of the journey. This is not intended to be flight instruction and the Young Eagles will not be at the controls, but you will be able to show them what is involved with piloting an aircraft through various routes, airspaces and airports.

To Be Eligible

  • You must be a paid up Kapiti Aero Club member
  • Have a minimum of 200 hours total time
  • Have a minimum of 75 hours PIC time
